Cannibal films are movies that focus on people’s tendencies toward cannibalism. These films were generally produced by Spanish and Italian filmmakers. The films generally depict Westerners traveling to Asia or Africa who are kidnapped by indigenous tribes and brutally murdered and eaten. Cannibal films feature scenes of cannibalism that run throughout the entire film. Cannibalism generally does not occur in isolation. It is combined with and stylized alongside rape, torture, eating, or religious rituals and ceremonies. Within this intricate structure, cannibalism is transformed into a part of the indigenous tribe’s way of life. Some time after the genre’s emergence, it began to shift its focus from locations such as Africa and Asia to stories set in areas dominated by the white race. These films have been banned in many countries due to the violent and sexual imagery they contain. While these bans have increased the visibility of the films and the genre, they have also led to the production of more films in this genre and the transformation of existing films into film series.
