Although the first examples date back to the 1920s, when cars began to become widespread, “carsploitation” films are a genre of exploitation cinema that emerged after World War II, following the much greater proliferation of automobiles and their transformation into a significant object of desire for all segments of society. Carsploitation films feature the exploitation of cars and acts of exploitation carried out using cars. Cars sometimes serve as objects of desire, while at other times they become the means to attain that object of desire. In many films, these two elements are used in tandem. In Carsploitation films, exploitation is often combined with other forms of exploitation. While some Carsploitation films stand out for their slasher elements, others can be categorized as sexploitation or rape-and-revenge films. Carsploitation films have coexisted harmoniously not only with various forms of exploitation but also with other subgenres of cinema. Considering their early history, Carsploitation films were generally produced in the United States and Australia. Over time, many other countries have begun producing Carsploitation films.
