In 1988, the Hong Kong government implemented a film censorship system featuring new categorization methods. From that point on, films subject to censorship began to be categorized under three different headings. Films in the first category are “semi-pornographic” softcore films, such as *Sex and Zen*. Films in the second category are “genre films” that offer adult-oriented versions of every type of Hong Kong film production. Films classified as Category Three are “pornoviolence” films. Category Three films feature abundant depictions of sexual abuse and violence, often accompanied by elements of horror and suspense.
