Chopsocky (or chop-socky) is a colloquial term used to describe martial arts and kung fu films produced by the Hong Kong action film industry between the late 1960s and early 1980s. The term was coined by the American film trade magazine Variety following the explosion of similar films released in the U.S. in 1973, in the wake of the success of *Five Fingers of Death*. The term “chopsocky” is a combination of “chop” (referring to a strike with the edge of the hand) and “sock” (due to its fist-like shape). These films are typically characterized by over-the-top storylines, exaggerated special effects (particularly exaggerated and sometimes bizarre sound effects during actual fight scenes), and extreme violence. The genre is also known for its clumsy dubbing. Although the term “Chopsocky” is widely used by the general media as a name for martial arts cinema, the word can also be derogatory when applied to films not made in this style.
