Hixploitation films are movies that depict the illegal activities of white Americans living in rural areas of the United States. In these films, “outsiders” who somehow find themselves in the rural areas of the American South or near the Appalachian Mountains in the U.S. are terrorized by the locals. The outsiders are taken captive, raped, tortured, and killed by the rural residents. Throughout these actions, numerous connections are drawn to various subgenres of exploitation cinema. While the outsiders sometimes manage to escape these situations—albeit at a cost—at other times they seek revenge against the rural residents, much like in Rape and Revenge films. Just as in “Rape and Revenge” films, the primary motivation of the main antagonist in “Hixploitation” films stems from sociological, socio-economic, and class differences within society.
