Martial Arts - List of Martial Arts Movies
Martial arts films are a genre that originated in Asia. The genre gained widespread popularity around the world following the release of Bruce Lee’s films (The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon, and Enter the Dragon). The most significant films in this genre in the U.S. are The Street Fighter and Sister Street Fighter. The films feature numerous martial arts styles among the characters. These fight scenes are typically the primary elements the films aim to showcase. In addition to being the most valuable content marketed to the audience, they are often a means of storytelling and character expression and development. In addition to the fights themselves, martial arts films frequently include training sequences. They generally incorporate other action elements such as chases and gunfights alongside hand-to-hand combat. Films usually conclude with a protracted battle between the main character and their most formidable enemy. Martial arts films became so popular that the genre branched out over time into a wide range of subgenres, including splatter and others. Influenced by Bruce Lee, the “Bruceploitation” subgenre emerged.
