Monster - List of Monster Movies
Monster - List of Monster Movies
Monster movies encompass the subgenres of "creature," "nature run amok," and "Kaiju" as a broader category. Although monster movies are generally exemplified by giant monster films (e.g., *Godzilla* (1954)), the first appearance of the main genre is *The Golem* (1915), a creature film that is one of the significant works of the German Expressionist movement. Monster movies fundamentally depict the harsh, ruthless, and terrorizing responses that humans face as a result of their mistreatment of nature and natural phenomena. Human actions—such as nuclear weapons testing, overhunting, genetic manipulation, experiments, or attempts to create alternative life forms—are met with a response similar to that seen in revenge films. This response may take the form of a mutated entity returning for revenge (*The Toxic Avenger* (1984)), a giant creature (*Godzilla* (1954)), or, in its most familiar form, zombies (*White Zombie* (1943)). Monster movies, which are critically important to the B-movie genre, can be considered a highly effective fusion with other exploitation films.
