Ozploitation films are exploitation films produced by Australian filmmakers. These films can be categorized under the umbrella of exploitation cinema into many subgenres, such as sexploitation, biker, shocksploitation, and carsploitation. The emergence of Ozploitation films dates back to the early 1970s. In 1971, the R rating was introduced in Australian cinemas specifically to classify Ozploitation films. By 1975, the Australian Film Commission (AFC) was established, alongside other major initiatives, to support the domestic production of feature-length films in Australia. The Australian Film Commission helped secure additional funding for the Australian New Wave, which emerged in the early 1970s, and played a role in the production of films such as Gillian Armstrong’s *My Brilliant Career* (1979) and Peter Weir’s *Picnic at Hanging Rock*, thereby giving momentum to the Australian New Wave. Under the banner of the Australian New Wave, numerous Ozploitation films were produced in the 1970s and 1980s. After a lull in the 1990s, Ozploitation film production began to rise again in terms of output starting in 2010 and beyond.
