Pornochanchada is a portmanteau of the words “porno” and “chanchada” (light comedy). It is the name given to a genre of sex comedy films produced in Brazil that gained popularity in the late 1960s. Pornochanchada films were first produced in São Paulo’s downtown area, nicknamed “Boca do Lixo” (“Trash Mouth”). The genre was generally viewed as part of the low-budget films produced there. Pornochanchada films were generally in line with sex comedies produced in other countries (Italy, Germany, Spain, the U.S., Argentina, Mexico, etc.), but some incorporated characteristics specific to Brazil. By the 1980s, the genre experienced a significant decline as hardcore pornography began to gain widespread prominence through underground videotapes.
