Sharksploitation films began to emerge as a distinct subgenre with *Jaws*, directed by Steven Spielberg in 1975. *Jaws* caused a huge sensation due to its mid-summer release, the most realistic visual effects of its time, and Spielberg’s masterful direction. The film quickly struck fear into people’s hearts, and its fame spread rapidly. It grossed dozens of times its budget at the box office. The concept presented in *Jaws* was similar to that of *Teensploitation* and *Slasher* films; due to its low production costs and its ability to generate the kind of curiosity that would draw audiences to theaters in the summer, it quickly became popular among B-movie producers. With the development and widespread adoption of CGI technology, “Sharksploitation” films have become one of the subgenres of exploitation films that has made the greatest inroads into the digital realm. Over time, the low numbers in actual statistics regarding shark attacks on humans have not prevented people from turning this topic into a cultural phenomenon.
