Slasher films, like splatter films, fall within the horror subgenre. Typically, they tell the story of a deranged killer using bladed weapons to murder a single person or a group of people. They do not contain as much gore as splatter films, but like splatter films and other shocksploitation films, their motivation to shock the audience is very high. Although Alfred Hitchcock’s *Psycho* is often cited as the genre’s seminal film, it was the movies made in the 1970s and 1980s that shaped the splatter genre into what it is today. Slasher films are one of the most widely accepted subgenres of exploitation cinema among mainstream audiences.
