Spacesploitation films are exploitation films set in space. A significant portion of spacesploitation films are rip-offs of blockbuster productions—such as *Star Wars*—to which they make direct references. Spaceploitation films sometimes copy blockbusters partially or entirely, while at other times they copy them by directly stealing scenes. Spaceploitation films generally focus on horror, suspense, and action. To keep production costs down, vast geographical areas such as deserts and plains are used to create a space-like atmosphere. These areas are depicted as the uncharted territories of other planets. Although these films are generally associated with the horror, thriller, and action genres, it is possible to find many Spacesploitation films that incorporate comedic elements intended to poke fun at space movies.
