Turkish sexploitation films emerged alongside the economic crisis that Yeşilçam was facing. By the late 1960s and into the 1970s, Hollywood’s growing dominance of the Turkish box office had placed Yeşilçam—which was already in an economic downturn—in an even more precarious position. Yeşilçam once again found a way out of its economic crisis through foreign films. The high box office returns of many sexploitation and martial arts films released in Turkey paved the way for Turkish sexploitation films. Film producers, directors, and actors began shifting to produce sexploitation films within a very short period. The sensational impact of these films led to significant revenue, particularly in Anatolia. Over time, Turkish sexploitation films began to evolve into pornographic films. Copies submitted to censorship boards were prepared appropriately, while hardcore scenes were added to the films before their theatrical release. Turkish sexploitation films sometimes incorporated elements of comedy and other times of action. By the 1980s—following the 1980 coup, increased restrictions, the widespread adoption of VHS, and producers’ efforts to respond to shifting market demands—Turkish sexploitation films entered their twilight years. Known as the “erotic craze,” this period’s impact on Turkish cinema lasted until the mid-1990s. It had negative consequences on the lives of many producers, directors, and especially actors.
