Summary
This quiet town at the foot of the Rocky Mountains serves as a refuge for a woman fleeing the outside world, while in the background, a harsh American Dream turns into a nightmare. Lars von Trier weaves elements of crime and suspense into a portrait of an eerie village life. Grace, a target of the mafia, accepts the protection offered by the townspeople in exchange for hard labor. But for this wanted outsider, this state of refuge slowly transforms into a form of silent servitude and a test of conscience. As boundaries are pushed, the darkest layers of human nature are laid bare.
