In 1930s Tokyo, time flows on outside a cramped room in a geisha house. As Nagisa Ōshima traces the path of a forbidden desire at the heart of the Shōwa era, he weaves a suffocating atmosphere that reveals how passion can completely consume a person. The relationship between Sada and her patron quickly transcends that of a mere forbidden love affair.
