Summary
The heat and poverty of Missouri breathe life into the dusty soil of the town of Spooner. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Calef, who has paused his journey from Michigan to California, becomes entangled in the town’s cramped way of life. Ordinary days on Lute’s farm are quickly overshadowed by the house’s dark secrets and a spiral of violence.
In this rural thriller, where alcohol, prohibitions, and repressed desires run rampant, Russ Meyer fuses a low-budget aesthetic with raw energy. The treacherous schemes Sidney hatches in his alcohol-fogged mind and the bigotry that descends on the town like a nightmare threaten Calef’s secret-filled past. This drama, where dust, dirt, and sweat intermingle, sets the stage for a reckoning from which the characters cannot escape.
