Summary
An Iron Maiden cassette echoing through the streets of Tehran in the shadow of bombs is both an escape and the voice of a new world for little Marjane. This adult-oriented animated film by Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi brings to the screen, in black-and-white lines, a coming-of-age story set against the devastating shadow of the Iranian Revolution. As oppression on the streets intensifies, Marji weaves her own small act of resistance with punk rock records and banned posters. As the exhilarating winds of change from the late ’70s give way to a rigid order, family relationships are also affected by this transformation. As Marjane chronicles these internal conflicts with keen observation, she struggles to find her identity in the shadow of an authoritarian regime. This turbulent journey becomes not just the story of a country, but the struggle of a young girl to find her own voice.
