Summary
Set against the cold streets of Washington, D.C., this William Friedkin classic begins inside an ordinary apartment, caught in a spiral of crisis and disbelief. That first moment when the silence is broken evokes not so much the shifting of objects in the room as the unease of a person’s alienation from their own sense of the sacred. As a mother’s helplessness echoes within the stark walls of the Roman Catholic Church, the cold breath of the supernatural traps the viewer in those dimly lit corridors as well. The darkness deep within grows with whispers and begins to shake even the sturdiest pillars of faith.
