On the platform at La Ciotat Station, time stands still amid skirts billowing in the wind and curious glances. That black mass appearing on the horizon, in sync with the rhythm of the approaching train, transports the viewer into a whole new reality in the late nineteenth century. This early short film, recorded by the Lumière brothers—Louis and Auguste—radically transformed the course of visual culture with the first moving train on the screen. As the train slowly pulls into the platform, passengers disembarking from the train cars and the hustle and bustle at the station blur the boundaries between reality and the darkness of the silver screen. This station encounter continues to defy the test of time as the purest and most enduring testament heralding the birth of moving images.
