On that quiet evening, which began amid the crackling of the gramophone, Mr. Bolcek moves with the weight of having just learned of his wife’s betrayal. As Wladysław Starewicz weaves an entomological tale of revenge on the black-and-white screen, he brings the world of insects into contact with humanity’s most pitiable states. On one side, the arrogant grasshopper cameraman; on the other, the dragonfly dancer trying to fill the void of her loneliness. This live-action animation experiment revolves around a jealous trap set through the images projected onto the screen. The reel spinning in the darkness of the theater brings deceptive relationships first to the screen, then into a major scandal. As the audience in the theater sees their own reflections on stage, Starewicz’s humorous language softens all the rigid rules of the era. This miniature world, constructed with real insect carcasses, leaves the audience face to face with a small act of revenge until the curtain falls.
