Summary
Ceylon’s humid winds bring together the island’s ancient rituals and the sounds of machinery brought by the modern world within a single frame. Basil Wright wanders unhurriedly through this landscape where machinery and faith intersect. The camera does not gaze upon the islanders through the eyes of an outsider, but with the serenity of a memory that defies time. As the shadow of industrialization falls over the temples, the sounds and frames that seep into the images compose the island’s own music. Rejecting the rushed, tourist-like gaze, this short documentary leaves the viewer in the midst of a tropical ritual, left to their own devices without any outside interference.
