Jump Cut
A style of editing that creates a sudden and unusual shift in movement within a scene or between scenes. It is achieved by cutting out a section from the middle of a shot, or by moving the camera closer to or farther from the subject in successive shots without changing the angle of view. Although this style is theoretically considered poor cinematic language, some directors use it deliberately to create a specific effect (as in Antonioni’s *Blow Up*). This technique was popularized by French New Wave directors, particularly Jean-Luc Godard.
