The origins of nudist films date back to the early days of cinema. The “Cinema of Attractions” movement, which emerged as producers sought to capture audiences’ attention quickly and get them to watch their films, included many films featuring nudity. The nudity in these films was created using simple techniques that were detached from plot and narrative. Scenes of undressing and dressing, along with voyeurism, were the most commonly used methods for depicting nudity. Following the “Cinema of Attractions” era, nudity began to find more space as cinema rose in prominence. By the 1930s, with the enactment of the Hays Code, nudity—along with many other elements—was banned in Hollywood. Nudist films reached their next peak—and the period in which the genre truly earned its name—with the opening of nudist camps. Alongside films about nudist camps, movies featuring voyeurism and exhibitionism formed the backbone of this genre.
