Summary
In the streets of Rome, cast in the shadow of the ruins, unemployment is a form of despair that has taken up residence on the streets. Vittorio De Sica places the burden of the struggle for survival in postwar Italy upon our shoulders through black-and-white frames. On the very day Antonio seizes that one chance to keep his family afloat, he loses his bicycle. The city he navigates with his young son is a labyrinth where survival instincts, not justice, reign supreme.
