Summary
In a remote, deeply religious Scottish village cut off from the outside world, strict traditions and the weight of religious belief suffocate every moment of life. Lars von Trier focuses on the lives of those shaken by an oil rig accident in this troubled landscape. Bess, who maintains a strange and dangerous bond with her bedridden husband, is gradually driven to the brink of the abyss under the insidious shadow of the church and authority. On the fine line between drama and romance, faith and subjugation become intertwined.
