Summary
That portrait adorning the wall of a luxurious apartment insidiously seeps into the minds of everyone in the room. The silhouette of the murdered woman is the only fact guiding the steps of the detective leading the investigation. Otto Preminger constructs a puzzle woven with shadows within the black-and-white film noir aesthetic of the 1940s.
As the detective examines the victim’s past and the suspicious portrait she left behind, the boundaries of truth begin to blur. In the dark corridors of the homicide division, jealousy and obsession completely alter the course of the investigation. The fascination with this enigmatic woman at the center of the crime makes maintaining a professional distance impossible.
