The story begins with the conversation of three men taking shelter under the roof of a dilapidated temple during a violent downpour. In this gloomy corner of Heian-period Japan, a murder and rape committed deep in the forest are brought to light. Akira Kurosawa pushes the boundaries of the jidaigeki genre by recounting the same event through the perspectives of four different people. As the witness testimonies in the courtroom unfold, it becomes clear just how slippery the ground of truth is. The woodcutter and the priest observe the dark and selfish aspects of human nature, while each witness adds details to justify their own version of events.
