Summary
In the crowded streets of Shōwa-era Tokyo, an elderly couple knocks on their children’s door after a long journey. However, the metropolis’s hectic pace is not particularly conducive to welcoming these quiet guests. Directed by Yasujirō Ozu, this drama gently explores the invisible distance between parents and children and the alienation brought about by modern life.
Amid the hustle and bustle of city life, where children cannot find time for their parents, Noriko—who remains devoted to the memory of her husband, lost in the war—becomes a refuge for them. Accompanied by the steam rising from tea in the tatami rooms and the sounds of trains in the background, a silent rift between generations unfolds. This visit, devoid of grand expectations, lays bare the purest essence of family and solitude.
