Begone Dull Care

The improvised notes flowing from the piano keys of the Oscar Peterson Trio come to life by being etched and painted directly onto the celluloid film. Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart completely reject traditional animation aesthetics, focusing instead on fluid forms and bursts of color. This short animation transforms the pulsating rhythm of jazz music into visual brushstrokes, promising the viewer a unique optical experience. The abstract transitions—which the eye struggles to follow—demonstrate in their purest form how sound and image can merge on the screen.
